Weekly Reflection Post #4 – Curation
This week in class we learned all about curation & annotation. Listening to a talk from Dr. Remi Kalir (Duke University) about it. He has the credentials as he has written about a book called Annotation, co-authored with Antero Garcia.
In the talk he went over real world examples of annotation and curation. For example, protests. If someone holds a sign up that is an example as you are shaaring your own notes publicly.

Another example is when you are taking notes from a textbook. As you are adjusting the original material into your own interpretation. It’s important to keep these notes private as it is how you personally view the document. However, if you do annotate another classmate’s presentation. You should ask them if it is fine you share your annotated notes.
Since the annotations you write are private. Unless the owner of the material asks for feedback, only then you should share. Dr. Remi even recommends to annotate the class syllabus as you will be to figure out what assignments are the mostt important. It is a way to give feedback to the teacher.
I found this was quite fun to learn as before going into this talk I had no idea what annotation was. I thought it was just taking notes. I now am thinking about everything I’ve annotated that my friends wrote. But I shared my annotations with them when they didn’t ask. It’s something I’m definitely going to keep in mind moving forward with them. I’ll also make sure to let them know of what I’ve learned today.
