Weekly Reflection Post #5 – Data Ownership

This week in class we listened to a talk about Data Ownership & Datafication. We also listened to a talk from Charlie Watson about UVIC’s Centre for accessibility learning (CAL).

As a student registered in CAL, it was an amazing talk on why the center exists and informing others why it is needed. I found it covered everything nicely such as the tech we are allowed to use.

As for the talk on Data Ownership & Datafication. The speaker brought up real world examples such as Elon Musk with his ownership of Twitter/X. I found one such slide which spoke about “Shifting powers from educators to vendors” interesting.

Hearing how data ownership of things like Twitter/X being shifted to someone who wants to use it for their own gain is a scary thought. I knew Elon Musk had bought it but I try to stay out of the news as it is a lot to keep up with. But learning how everything we do online, even down to our keystrokes? That is our own data.

We need to protect our own data and not let someone use it for their own gain. As someone who uses the internet for my own personal projects I plan to publish. It makes me concerned someone may steal it for their own use. I have seen it happened to others so it is a concern. Learning about how to own our data is valuable to me and I am thankful for learning about it from this talk.
